Have you ever wondered what a coach says to his players in the locker room at halftime? Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers is considered one of the greatest football coaches ever. Below is a list of 10 sayings he was known for. I imagine Lombardi threaded one or more of these quotes into every halftime conversation.

  1. Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.
  2. It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.
  3. Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
  4. Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.
  5. Football is like life – it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication, and respect for authority.
  6. Winners never quit and quitters never win.
  7. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
  8. Winning is not everything, but wanting to win is.
  9. The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
  10. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

To all my clients and colleagues, this is half-time for the year 2022. My congratulations to those who are succeeding. To those who are working to get on track, I am sending this communication to encourage you! The first half, while important, isn’t the game. It’s the final score that counts. The summer quarter is the most important quarter of the business year because it’s when most people slack off. Now is the time to double down and turn up the heat at whatever your position is on the team and strive for greatness. Do extra, be extraordinary!

While there are certain essential ingredients always in the mix, the truth is, I believe there is one common trait in every person who is thriving. They have a killer work ethic. They are up, and at it early. Every day! These people know how to grind. They have grit and they understand the meaning of perseverance.

Success is extracted from the grind of mundane work.

Do you wish you were Peyton Manning, Carrie Underwood, or someone else you admire? Only about 5% of what they do in front of the world is fantastic. What we do not see is the absolute mundane work they do before “showtime.”

Here is my advice:  master the mundane. 

The mundane is where drift occurs, people lose focus and they can ultimately lose their business or their job. We must learn to push through and keep grinding.
